The CBI was established under recommendation of the Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption.

It was set up in 1963 by a resolution of the Union Home Ministry and later transferred to the Ministry of Personnel.

It isn't a statutory body but derives its powers from the Special Police Establishment Act, of 1946.

Crimes under corruption, economic offenses and organized crime other than terrorism come under the ambit of CBI.

The CBI Academy is located in Ghaziabad, UP and has 3 regional training centers.
